A commoner respected for his knowledge of law and politics, Pory was appointed, in 1618, secretary to the new governor of Virginia, and he became the first speaker of the first Legislative Assembly of America. A professional newsletter writer all of his life, he was one of the first journalists of his time. His letters contain contemporary information on the Thirty Years War, social and political conditions in England, and his impressions of Virginia.
